Our family’s name and trade have been handed down through the generations. They can be traced back to our ancestor Bartolomeo Bortolomiol, who was mentioned in documents from the mid-18th century. Bartolomeo dedicated his life to growing vines in the Valdobbiadene hills and passed his love of the land on to his descendants. Among them was Guglielmo Bortolomiol. He was the youngest of three brothers, so everyone called him by the diminutive form of his name: Gemin.

Guglielmo Bortolomiol – Gemin

He was born in a little house in the Valdobbiadene countryside on 11 August 1931.

The Bortolomiol family were already renowned at the time and their head Guglielmo Bortolomiol – known as Gelmo – was a highly respected figure in Valdobbiadene. All of the people of the town turned to him for help negotiating deals and resolving disagreements, both inside and outside their families.

Gelmo’s love for the vineyards and dedication to hard work were inherited by his three sons: Giuliano, Labano and Guglielmo, who was affectionately nicknamed Gemin to distinguish between him and his father.

They embarked on a new sparkling wine venture in Valdobbiadene when they founded the Fratelli Bortolomiol (Bortolomiol Brothers) winery together in 1949.

After their father Guglielmo Bortolomiol passed away, the three young entrepreneurs went their separate ways, remaining on friendly terms but plotting their own paths in the business world. The amicable nature of their relationship is underlined by the fact that Gemin continued to take his grapes to his older brother Giuliano in the main winery, where the initial processing was done.

With 40 years in the wine business behind him, Gemin soon set to work on an ambitious project to build a grape-processing facility for the Spumanti Gemin winery that was entirely underground. In 1985, Gemin handled his whole harvest in-house for the first time.
